Bucklin High School SADD Chapter Celebrates Red Ribbon Week

by Bev Birney

October 30, 2009

The Bucklin High School SADD (Student’s Against Destructive Decisions) chapter took part in several Red Ribbon Week activities during the week of October 26th.
The members prepared for the week by placing red ribbons on doors in the elementary, junior high, and high school.
On Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, several SADD members went to the elementary and junior high school classrooms to talk to students about the dangers of smoking cigarettes and chewing tobacco, using drugs, and drinking alcohol. Each day brought about a new topic and a new activity. The elementary students entered a coloring contest while the junior high students tried to make the best class banner. The contest pieces were displayed in the front lobby and elementary hallway. Awards were given at an assembly on Thursday.
On Thursday, the SADD members held two assemblies. The first assembly involved the preschool – 4th grade students. The organization had put together a game show that was very much like Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader, although their show was entitled, Are You Smarter Than A SADD Member. Under the direction of hosts Abbi P. and Tanner B., contestants Rylie P. and Rowdy S. competed to win a million dollars (or in their case, a glow in the dark miniature basketball and goal). Several students were chosen to be a part of the class in order to help Rylie and Rowdy win.
Following the game show, random numbers were drawn and red footballs with a drug free message were handed out. Prizes for the week’s activities were also awarded.

Kim Seuss was the final winner, with the help of Jac Curtis, Logan Davis, and Alex Long. 5th grade students who tried to beat the junior high were: Alivia J., Sierra C., Alicia G., Hunter D., Cameron B., and James S. Each received a prize for their participation. The 8th Grade class was awarded the prize for best banner of the week with their message of Knocking Our Drugs and Alcohol. All banner are on display in the school hallway. The assembly concluded with each 5th – 8th grade student receiving a Stay Sharp Be Drug Free pencil pouch after they signed a pledge banner stating they would remain drug and alcohol free.
